At the 2006 Olympics in Turino, Italy, Evan Lysacek came down with the stomach flu, and skated a poor short program. "It's hard because I dreamed about the Olympics for upwards of a decade. And that dream didn't include getting sick with a stomach flu, getting stuck with IVs, having my veins collapse and falling in the short program.... It became about something different--courage," Evan said.

With medical help and singleminded determination, Evan pulled himself together and skated a thrilling, passionate free skate to Carmen. As a result he not only achieved a new personal best, but also vaulted himself from tenth place to fourth. His Carmen program was the third best free skate of the Olympic men's figure skating competition, and included eight triple jumps, three in combination. Evan said afterwords, "I'm very happy. It was close to getting a medal.......and it gives me a lot of confidence."

Evan's free skate at the 2006 winter Olympics was one of the most impressive and moving ice skating performances I have ever seen from a male skater. Personally, I believe that if he masters the quad, he could be the gold medalist at the 2010 Olympics.
