About Sasha Cohen
Olympics 2006 Figure Skating Silver Medalist
Part five: Sasha Cohen 2000 - 2001

Sasha Cohen began competing as a senior figure skater in 1999, stunning the figure skating commmunity by beating Michelle Kwan in the short program competition at U.S. Nationals 2000. Because because she fell during her long program, Sasha won the silver rather than the gold medal.

Sasha was now competing as both a junior and senior level figure skater. She needed to do well at the Junior World Championships to qualify for Senior Worlds, but her performance there was not satisfactory.

Further disappointments ensued, since the following year, an arthritic lower back problem forced her to withdraw from U.S. Nationals 2001 in Boston. Unable to perform jumps when skating for Champions on Ice, and inspired by Katia Gordeeva's ribbon program, she developed her own ribbon program with Katia's choreographic help, to the music Anytime, Anywhere.

Friends with Naomi Nari Nam, who struggled with a chronic hip injury, Sasha learned to curb her impatience and to nurse her skating injuries immediately rather than risk long term physical problems. As she healed from back pain, she had to relearn her jumps, using a harness.

Sasha was able to compete again in fall 2001, and she landed her first quad in public during practice at Skate America, She did not, however, land it during the competition. Sasha Cohen's 2000-2001 competitive programs were My Sweet and Tender Beast, and Dark Eyes.
