About the Marshalls Figure Skating Challenge

The 2006 Marshalls U.S. Figure Skating Challenge at Agganis Arena at Boston University on Dec. 10, 2006 featured interactive voting to twelve performances by leading competitive U.S. figure skaters, divided into east coast and west coast teams. All of the skaters have medalled at a national or international competition, and most skate with Champions on Ice.

The figure skaters who train on the West Coast were winter Olympics silver medalist Sasha Cohen, Four Continents champion Katy Taylor, two-time World medalist Evan Lysacek, and two-time U.S. pairs champions Rena Inoue & John Baldwin. East Coast skaters were included World champion Kimmie Meissner, U.S. bronze medalist Emily Hughes, three-time U.S. champion Johnny Weir, and Olympics ice dancing silver medalists Tanith Belbin & Ben Agosto.

During the first round, east coast and west coast skaters performed, followed by a fan vote. The judges, Peggy Fleming, Dick Button and Peter Carruthers, also critiqued the skaters and chose their favorites. The top two east and west coast skaters according to the fan vote (not the judges vote) then competed a second round.

The first round, the fans chose Sasha Cohen and Inoue and Baldwin as west coast winners, and Johnny Weir and Kimmie Meissner as east coast winners. The judges picked Evan and Johnny. Evan Lysacek, Belbin and Agosto, Katie Taylor and Emily Hughes did not get to skate a second round (although I was able to photograph their second program at the rehearsal and have included these photos on these pages).

After the second round of four programs, the judges chose Sasha Cohen as their favorite. The fan vote was for Sasha Cohen first, and Johnny Weir second. Sasha Cohen was declared the winner.
