About Sasha Cohen

Sasha Cohen, born Alexandra Pauline Cohen on October 26, 1984, is of Ukrainian ancestry, and lives in Newport Beach California. Trained in ballet, and previously competing as a gymnast, Sasha quickly advanced in the world of junior figure skating once she embraced her new passion. Her 2nd place finish at U.S. Nationals during her 2002 debut in seniors skyrocketed her to instant notoriety in the ice skating world.

Sasha placed 4th in the 2002 winter Olympics, and won the silver medal at the 2006 winter Olympics, despite a flawed free skate. During 2005 and 2006, she has also won the gold and silver medal at US Nationals, and the silver and bronze at the Worlds Championships.

Sasha demonstrates extraordinary grace, elegance and flexibility as a figure skater. Although her technique can be inconsistent, and she has become known for her "Sasha splat", her acrobatic positions and breathtaking spiral continue to delight audiences and judges throughout the world, and to lead many to favor her over Michelle Kwan and Irina Slutskaya.

Sasha has been coached by John Nicks most of her skating career, although she previously moved to Connecticut for two years to train with Tatiana Tarasova. Her primary choreographer is Nikoli Morosov. During 2005-2006, she has been skating to Dark Eyes, Romeo and Juliet, Nutcracker Pas de Deux, and as an exhibition program, God Bless America.

Feisty and outspoken, Sasha expresses herself spontaneously and openly off the ice, often (like Johnny Weir), sparking controversy. Multifaceted and multi-talented, she also pursues her Hollywood dream of acting, most recently in the independent film, Moondance Alexander, and through a number of television appearances on shows such as Las Vegas and Project Runway. Courted by the fashion magazines, Sasha is very interested in fashion, designing many of her own costumes and considering future work as a fashion designer. But her interests are not just athletic and artistic; she also actively promotes a variety of charities.

Although not skating in the Grand Prix series in fall 2006, Sasha will compete in early 2007, and continue to skate with the Tom Collins Champions on Ice tour from April - July. I recommend attending Champions on Ice shows each year, and suggest getting your tickets early, so you can sit close to the ice and watch Sasha's magic closeup - as well as several dozen of the world's leading figure skaters. She is truly awe-inspiring to watch.
