Beyond the Past

copyright 1987 by Tracy Marks

The more I focus on the past, the more I give it power to control me, for I take energy away from the present moment. As powerful as the tug of old habits and memories is upon me now, I know that the impact of the present moment, and a single vision of my future path can outweigh it. By focusing upon my vision, and allowing myself to feel it intensely, I facilitate lasting change. Thus I become in touch with my own power.

If my engine were in the rear, stuck in the caboose of past patterns or memories of past relationships, pushing me slowly and laboriously from behind, I would not have traveled far from the station from which I started. But with my engine in the front, focused on present possibilities and future goals, pulling along the deadweight behind, I feel freer to chug bravely over new tracks, into known and unknown territory.
