About Sasha Cohen
Olympics 2006 Figure Skating Silver Medalist
Part eight: Sasha Cohen 2005-06

In 2005, Sasha Cohen returned to her previous coach John Nicks in southern California, and soon afterwards won the silver medal at both U.S. Nationals and Worlds Figure Skating Competition. For the 2005-06 figure skating season, she would again skate Dark Eyes as her short program, a revised Romeo and Juliet as her long program, and both Don't Rain on My Parade and God Bless America for exhibitions. Nikoli Morosov was her primary choreographer.

In 2005, Sasha published her autobiography, Fire on Ice, which she revised in March 2006 after including a chapter on her Olympics experience. Early in 2006, she won gold at U.S. Nationals and silver at the Turino winter Olympics, in spite of somewhat flawed programs. She was not happy with her performances, but pleased to win the silver medal. At Worlds several months later, she earned bronze.

Because she felt exhausted from a competitive Olympics year, and was enthused about off-ice activities, especially acting, Sasha elected not to skate in the fall 2006 Grand Prix series, and in December announced that she would not be competing in U.S. Nationals in January. She did however develop a new program, West Side Story, which she skated at Marshalls Figure Skating Challenge in December, and she repeatedly reasserts her intention to return to competition and to represent the U.S. in the 2010 Olympics.

Sasha Cohen has millions of skating fans who appreciate both her dynamic, feisty personality and her gorgeous skating, and look forward to her return to the ice. No skater can match Sasha in regard to elegance and flexibility, and especially the beauty of her spiral sequences. Although some criticize Sasha for inconsistency which too often results in a "Sasha splat", most viewers are awed by the "Sasha split" and those magical moments when Sasha manages to successfully and gracefully to integrate technical excellence with superb artistry.
