Part four: Sasha as a Junior Figure Skater

In 1998, Sasha Cohen qualified as a junior level figure skater, and soon afterwards won the gold medal at both the junior regionals and sectional competitions. At 1999 U.S. Nationals, she began to receive considerable public attention when she won the silver medal, placing second to Sara Wheat.

During 1999, Sasha also won the Val Gardena Winter Trophy in her first international competition, and the gold medal at the Junior Grand Prix. 1999 was also the first year she skated a few performances with Champions on Ice.

Sasha was now aiming to become a senior figure skater, and developing new programs. In 1999-2000, her long program would be Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, her short program Vivaldi's Baroque Selections, and her exhibition program, Puccini's Madame Butterfly. Her choreographer was her coach, John Nicks.
